Oddr's Aspilogia

1 hour

Have you wanted to learn the Complex Search Form, only to be thwarted by its complexity? Have you ever wondered how to check field-primary armory in a single step? Have you ever had to leave a consult hanging because you simply didn't have an internet connection? Come learn about Oddr's Aspilogia, an app for Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 (and Windows Mobile 10!) devices, and how it can save you from hauling the printed copy of the SCA Ordinary & Armorial around site.

Pre-requisites: While experience in conflict checking will be very useful, it is not a requirement. We will not, however, cover SENA in any particular detail. Reviewing SENA ahead of time - Appendix I in particular - is highly recommended.

 $              -

 Students are invited to bring a Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 device, or a phone running Windows Mobile 10. It is recommended to pre-install the app from the Windows Store (search for Aspilogia), and run it once to download the current O&A. Students are also invited to bring names and armory they're interested in checking for conflict.

Heralds and Our Place in [the] Society

1 hour

 As heralds in the SCA, we tend to have a good idea of our role -- but how often do we encounter people who think our ways and means are arbitrary and made-up?  How do we tie our modern duties to those of our historical counterparts, and how do we explain that to others? Where did heralds find themselves in Society, and how did that change over time with the rise and fall of the Tournament? What is the connection between minstrels, military advisors, and the modern actor Paul Betteny? What was Coldharbour and why was it important? What was the business with Scrope v Grosvenor? Who was William Bruges? Sir Anthony Wagner? Why should you care?      This will be a round table discussion about what it meant to be named "herald".

 $              -

Students should bring more questions than we can answer in an hour. Questions can also be emailed to the moderator at oddr@thuban.org.
