Baroness' Birthday/Rapier Defender's Tourney

November 07, 2009
Lions Gate

Vancouver, BC

Autocrat: Lady Ceara Inghean ui Mhadadhain

Come join the Barony of Lions Gate as we celebrate Baroness Caitrin with a Winter Tourney in honour of Her Birthday.  There will be lots to do and see!  There will be two rapier tournaments - Lions Gate Defender and Gerhard's Riposte.  There will be the Annual Unbelted Heavy Tournament.  Perhaps there will be something of the A&S variety as well to round things out.   And if that's not enough, there will be dancing, games, music, Pied Piper, merchants and socializing too.  The complete details will be available online via the Kingdom Calendar.  It will be updated regularly.  If there is info you need and it's not there, please contact the Autocrat.

Tournaments

Lions Gate Defender of Rapier Tournament
The Baron and Baroness would like all competitors in the defender tourney to know that as a part of this rank, the two victors this day will be expected over the next year to:

  • Defend Their Excellencies and the Barony of Lions Gate against all who would take up arms against Them whenever possible;
  • When present, to join us at Our courts;
  • Represent the Barony when travelling to other branches;
  • Attend the three major local events, being Banquet, Baronesses and May Bardic;
  • Compete in the name of Lions Gate over the next year; and,
  • Swear fealty to their Excellencies or Lions Gate or an oath of service to the Barony.

The Rapier Defender's tourney details will be confirmed at Court.  You must be present at the Rapier Invocation at Opening Court first thing in the morning (see schedule) in order to compete for Lions Gate Defender of Rapier.

Those competitors holding champion/defender titles from other branches or planning on competing in other branch competitions for the next year should speak with the Baron or Baroness.

Gerhard's Riposte Tournament
We will be celebrating in tournament the anniversary of "Gerhard's Riposte" (formerly known as Fibreglass Champion).  This is a tournament for ALL Fighters authorized for less than a year or unauthorized.  You must also have patron to recommend and be accepted by the Master of Blades, who will be advised by attending White Scarves.  Questions about the tourney format can be directed to our Master of Blades, HL Warwick Drakkar.

Continuing with a new tradition started last year, there will also be a Chivalry prize awarded to a rapier fighter in Dona Lasairiona inghean Uilliam na Seoltadh's name.

Heavy Tournament
The heavy tourney will follow some of the Lions Gate traditions.  To enter the lists, you must do two things:

1.         Bring an item for the prize table
2.         Challenge a Knight to a round (this does not count as a death for the tourney).

Belted fighters will be included in the tourney fighting till the quarterfinals.  If there are enough Knights participating (and if eric space allows), we will branch off into two separate tourneys, so that when the day is through we will have both an unbelted and a belted winner for the day.  There will be a prize for the winners of these tourneys, and everyone will be able to participate in the prize table.

Please note that the Sergeant who excels for the day in fighting will be awarded the Boar Spear for the next year; a tribute from Sir Gerhard Kendal of Westmoreland.

Lists
Lists will open immediately after Opening Court.  Heavy and Rapier fighting is scheduled to begin at 11:00 promptly as we only have the Alice McKay Hall until 3:00pm.  Please pass the word to all fighters.

Rapier Lists:   Dame Elena de Mainslwarin
Heavy Lists:  HL Algae

Arts & Sciences Contest
"Inspirations"

Since this a big tourney day, let's have a contest on inspiring our fighters to win.  Create a favour or some other token to inspire and bring it to the event to be displayed with your name and who your inspiration is for the day.  No documentation required.

There will be a prize for the favourite entry selected by Her Excellency, Baroness Caitrin, and the favourite of the Populace.  To vote, drop a coin of any denomination (ie. pennies, quarters, loonies) into the appropriate box.   Voting will begin after morning Court once the display has been set up.   Funds collected through the voting will be donated to the local food bank.

Games Tournament by HL Uilliam and HL Caitrina

Merchants
Merchants are very welcome!   There is no merchanting fee but pre-registration is required due to very limited space.  Merchants who have not pre-registered may not be given space to sell their wares as a result. Merchanting will be in Shannon Hall only however if you wish to brave the elements, space could be arranged outdoors as well.

Please note that at this time, merchant registration is complete and spots are full.  There is space for roving merchants however.

Merchant Coordinator:  Lord Adam Fairamay

Pied Piper
Activities for children will be available at the event during the day.  All children must be accompanied by an adult during participation.  Remember, this is not a babysitting service.

Pied Piper:  Baron Stefano di Armani

Day Food
Food during the day will be available from the Cloverdale Rodeo Concession from 11 am to 3 pm.

Potluck and Tavern
Reviving the tradition of Tourney's in the past....we're having a potluck!  Participants are encouraged to bring a copy of their recipe or at least to note if their dish has any common allergens in it (ie. nuts, wheat, dairy).  Please make a dish enough for 10 people.  There is a kitchen on site for cooling and warming but no cooking.

According to first letter of your mundane last name:

A-D:     Salads, breads, cheese, pickles
E-J:      Rice, pasta and taters
K-M:     Meats
N-R:     All things veggie
S-Z:     Desserts

This is a guide so if you really wish, if you have something that is your specialty and/or are dying to try a period dish, by all means do so. There will be a prize for best presentation of a dish!  The tavern in the evening will be hosted by the Cloverdale Rodeo.

Potluck coordinator:  Lady Myrrim de Lancaster

Volunteers
Oh yes, you are very much needed!  List runners, tourney heralds, waterbearers, set up, take down, gate, etc, etc, etc.  You know the drill.  If you can loan your precious time for even one small task, please contact Ceara at ccaunce@shaw.ca.  Your efforts will be rewarded!

Note that the above Weather and Map information is generated from the site address and can be easily confused. The weather will say if its for the branch or for the site. It will be for the site if the site can be found, but this again is not always the case, and if the site is some distance from the branch then the weather may be different.
