Kingdom Preceptor of the College of Pages

 

Job Description

This position is a Lessor Office, under the Kingdom Chatelaine. The appointee supervises the Provosts of Pages, the Deans of Pages (either directly or indirectly), and is the administrator for the College of Pages program. Written reports are sent to: Their Majesties and the Kingdom Chatelaine; cc: Their Royal Highnesses, the Kingdom Seneschal and the Deputy for Children's Issues to the Society Chatelaine. Reports are due by the 15th of each of the following months: March, June, September and December, or per the Laws of the Kingdom of An Tir. Oral reports are to be presented at each Crown event, in Curia, and whenever required by Their Majesties, Their Royal Highnesses, the Kingdom Seneschal or the Kingdom Chatelaine. If the Preceptor is not able to attend a Crown event, Their Majesties, Their Royal Highnesses, the Kingdom Chatelaine and the Kingdom Seneschal should be informed and the report may be given to the Drop Dead Deputy or to the Kingdom Chatelaine for communication.

 

Duties of the Kingdom Preceptor of the College of Pages include:

Act as confidential liaison between Their Majesties, Their Royal Highnesses, Kingdom Seneschal, Kingdom Chatelaine and representatives of outside organizations. Supervise, implement and coordinate all services for the COP exercising independent judgment and decision making authority. Establish, interpret and apply COP policies and procedures to ensure they are in compliance with all governing laws, modern and SCA, rules and procedures; or as directed by Their Majesties, the Kingdom Seneschal, or the Kingdom Chatelaine. Present an annual Budget for approval to the Kingdom Exchequer each July for reasonable expenses and purchases, as outlined in the, Kingdom Law An Tir Handbook and the College of Pages Charter. Participate in the College of Pages Advisory Council and provide the Council with copies of pertinent information for review and action.

Provide services to the populace of the SCA at each Crown event, notifying Autocrats of required space and facilities well in advance of the event. In the circumstance that the Kingdom Preceptor is not in attendance at a Crown event, the Drop Dead Deputy will provide services. The Preceptor will present information about the COP to the general populace in any manner appropriate. Apprise the Kingdom Crier Editor of positions filled or vacated. Write press releases for publication in The Crier, branch newsletters and other publications as needed.

The Preceptor will work in association with, and encourage the involvement of, the various groups, Guilds, Ithras and Colleges within the SCA for the enhancement of the COP curriculum, and teaching of the Young Gentles participating. Will be available to sign off on any Challenges in a Ranking Pages Certification Book, once satisfied that the proficiency requirements for the Challenge have been met. Plan and execute ceremonies, provide certificates or other awards as appropriate for the achievements of the participants. Provide the Deans and Provosts with certificates and other symbols of recognitions as outlined in the College of Pages Handbook.

Advises and directs Branch and Regional Officers regarding policies and procedures related to the COP in matters of curriculum development, accepting applications, and interviewing for appointments, warranting and customary services. Provide instruction and training for the COP Staff as deemed appropriate. Provide the Kingdom Constable with background check forms, as required, on applicants to Branch and Regional Offices and recommend the appointing (warranting), promotion or termination of officers.

Utilize discernment, tact and discretion in matters that are brought through the Grievance Procedures; advise disputants to make use of the Grievance procedures if they had not done so. Consult with Kingdom Seneschal, Kingdom Chatelaine, Their Majesties, and Their Royal Highnesses (all or a combination thereof) on issues of implications, ethical considerations and risk issues when necessary.

Compile articles, edit and publish the quarterly "Pages Gazette". This publication is for encouragement, sharing of ideas among the COP officers, official acceptance of Challenges additions approved by the Advisory Council, and a Public Relation tool to keep the general populace informed of the happenings within the COP. Coordinate the mailing of the Gazette and any other correspondence for publication. Be aware of and obey copyright laws. Maintain (or appoint a deputy to do so) the Web page for the College of Pages; format and compose communication strategies. Compose letters responding to inquiries about the COP.

Responsible for the overall organization and retention of the COP files and transcripts. Set up and maintain policy, transcription and archival files for the COP. Periodically review and revise program materials to fulfill the requirements of the COP. Prepare the materials for the review of the Advisory Council.

 

 

Experience and Skills vital to the Performance of Duties 

A demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong, harmonious working relationships, internal and external to the COP, and effectively address complex and sensitive administrative issues, with excellent communication, organizational and leadership skills. Familiarity with the SCA hierarchy, Kingdom Laws and other policy and procedural reference handbooks within the SCA; and have an understanding of how they relate to the COP. Capable of creating, maintaining and storing records for the COP.
